League Charity Events and Beneficiaries

As an active and responsible member of Houston's gay community, every year the MSL donates a percentage of its annual revenues to local charities. Upon review of their needs, the Board of Trustees chooses these charities at the beginning of each season. The league takes great pride in being able to give something back to the community we serve.

AssistHers is a volunteer organization formed in 1996 to provide non-medical in-home support and care to lesbians with illnesses such as cancer, fibromyalgia, HIV/AIDS and multiple sclerosis. Volunteers work together to provide transportation and care to help clients remain in their own homes.

LIVE CONSORTIUM, a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, educates our Houston community not only about HIV, but also how to break through the barriers preventing individuals from talking about the disease.

Through educating our family, friends, neighbors and children about HIV and the negative effects of stigma, more individuals will become aware everyone is at risk of contracting HIV, will get tested, enter treatment and seek emotional support.

The Osito Foundation provides Teddy Bears to Children & Youth impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Teddy Bears have a profound positive effect on the emotions of both children and adults, we all have an innate attraction to them. When someone receives a Teddy Bear they feel less depressed, anxious and agitated and demonstrate a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.

When we are emotionally healthy we can better control our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. We feel better about ourselves, tend to have better relationships and keep our problems in perspective. Teddy Bears are known to improve emotional health.
